How to use it
- Pick a vocabulary: Classic Lorem for the familiar Latin, or Developer for technical words like
parser, mutexandrollback. - Pick Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, and set the count under How many paragraphs (the label follows the unit), from 1 to 100.
- Under Options, Start with the classic line opens Classic Lorem with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit”. Wrap each paragraph in
<p>tags gives HTML. - Press Copy text above the result.
The line under the text counts paragraphs, sentences and words, and names the seed the text was drawn from. Changing an option keeps the seed, so switching back restores the text. Regenerate draws a new seed and a new text.
Examples
Classic Lorem, Words, 8, with the classic line on, always gives the line itself, whatever the seed:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit
With 5 words it’s Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. A cut never leaves a dangling comma or full stop.
Developer, Sentences, 2, seed 42:
Lexer vector request compiler object, endpoint queue worker lock deploy compile socket. Coroutine module runtime protocol algorithm, lock type atomic predicate.
The line under it reads 1 paragraph · 2 sentences · 21 words · seed 42.
Classic Lorem, Paragraphs, 3, seed 42, comes out as 3 paragraphs · 19 sentences · 210 words · seed 42. With Wrap each paragraph in <p> tags, 5 words gives:
<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet</p>
Good to know
- The shape is fixed, the words are random. A sentence runs 6 to 16 words, with a comma after the fifth when it has eight or more, and a paragraph runs 4 to 8 sentences. Words cuts the text at exactly the number you ask for.
- Only the opening line is the famous text. After “elit”, words are drawn from the 196-word lorem ipsum vocabulary, so you won’t get the usual “sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt…” passage word for word. The opening sentence runs 8 to 16 words, so it can go on past “elit”.
- The Developer list has 136 words and no brand names. It suits mockups of docs and dashboards, where Latin looks out of place.
- Paragraphs are a blank line apart in plain text. In HTML each one is a
<p>element on its own line. - The seed is a 32-bit number (0 to 4,294,967,295) from your browser’s
crypto.getRandomValues. The text comes from a small seeded generator (mulberry32), so the same seed and settings always write the same text. - Placeholder text hides real problems. Real headlines, names and translations often run longer, so test the layout with real copy before launch.
Questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Very little: it’s scrambled Latin from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The source phrase is dolorem ipsum, “pain itself”; lorem is dolorem with its first syllable cut off. The rest is Latin words, some cut or made up, in an order that means nothing.
How do I insert lorem ipsum in VS Code?
Type lorem and press Tab: VS Code’s built-in Emmet expands it to 30 words. lorem10 gives 10 words, and p*3>lorem in an HTML file gives three paragraphs.
Why use placeholder text instead of real copy?
So people judge a layout without reading it: real words pull a review toward the content, while filler keeps the attention on type, spacing and hierarchy.
